"Talks in the Tavern" Series

Hellertown Historical Society is proud to offer events and experiences focused on the colonial history of our country. With the approaching Semiquincentennial, the 250th anniversary since declaring our independence from England, we are offering events that correspond to this theme. The “Talks in the Tavern” series will continue again in 2026 with all new subject matter. Plan to join us for these quaint, friendly, and informative presentations and interactions with local, living historians about our country’s colonial past in the comfort of our historic 1760’s Tavern in the lower level of the Heller-Wagner Grist Mill. Be sure to visit this page often as new events in this series are scheduled and posted.

Below is a list of dates for the “Talks in the Tavern” series for 2026.

Thursday, August 27 @ 7PM - "Coffee with a Colonial"

Berks County resident and living historian, Samuel Leamer, brings a blended passion of history and coffee to our rustic Tavern venue. Through a variety of material culture he has collected over time, Mr. Leamer will provide a deep, rich understanding of the colonial coffee culture in North America and how it fueled a nation’s beginnings. And, of course, coffee and pastries will be served.

The Tavern venue is located at 150-170 West Walnut Street in the lower level of the historic Heller-Wagner Grist Mill building. Off-street parking is available on the west side of the building adjacent to the Tavern entrance. Doors will open at 6:30PM. This event is open to the public and free to attend.

Thursday, September 17 @ 7PM - "Plant Medicines Used in the Revolutionary War"

During the Revolutionary War, when costly imported medical supplies were no longer available, doctors turned to gardens and fields for healing plants used for generations. Wendy Gruver, a retired Professor at the University of Pennsylvania and a Registered Herbalist, will present the historical use of lifesaving plants and discuss how this war was a pivotal point in the evolution of medicine.

Future “Talks” will be held October 15 and December 17. Details will be announced later for these.

All events held in the historic Heller-Wagner Grist Mill Tavern located at 150-170 West Walnut Street, Hellertown PA 18055
